The Rise of the People’s Assembly

NottmPeoplesAssemblyAround the UK over the last few months there have been meetings of the People’s Assembly taking place.  Thousands of people participated in the meetings, which were held in Sheffield, Manchester, Brighton, Newcastle and Nottingham.  As Politics:bitesize has already reported, the movement was launched with an open letter to The Guardian that was signed by notable names such as Tony Benn, Caroline Lucas MP and Owen Jones.

The letter called for ‘all those millions of people in Britain who face an impoverished and uncertain year’ to join in with the movement and stand up against crippling austerity.  And, it seems, people from across the country have been doing just that.  Owen Jones has spoken passionately at all of the meetings mentioned above about the need for the 99% to change the system using their collective power.

The People’s Assembly will culminate in a gathering in London on Saturday 22 June 2013 from 9:30am – 5pm at Central Hall, Westminster but the Movement itself hopes to continue beyond this date. In an interview with Red Pepper Owen Jones tells us why the movement matters, what it hopes to achieve and what its future holds.

By joining together it is possible to make a difference.
